You can generate an invoice for free in Canada in three ways: build one in a spreadsheet, use a document template, or run it through a free invoicing service. A ready-made copyable invoice template is there if you want a file to adapt. For a service, Wave says its Starter plan includes free invoice creation, with unlimited invoices at no cost. Check current plan terms and any separate payment-service fees before choosing a service, and see our invoicing-software comparison if you want to compare options. Google Docs and Sheets can also create a file from a template or a blank document; Google lists a free personal plan.
Three practical routes
- Spreadsheet: open a blank sheet, enter the line items and formulas, and keep a copy for each invoice. Google explains how to create a sheet.
- Document: use a template or blank file, type the details and totals, then send or export a copy. Review all amounts manually.
- Invoice software: use the provider’s invoice workflow and check the features included in your plan — see our invoicing-software comparison. Set up taxes according to your own supply; software does not decide every tax question for you.
Check the tax and required records
GST/HST treatment depends on the seller, type of supply and place of supply. Self-employed taxi and commercial ride-sharing drivers must register for GST/HST even if they are small suppliers under the $30,000 threshold. Required invoice fields and ITC documentation get stricter once a transaction reaches $100, then again at $500, and Quebec adds its own QST description rule — see our CRA invoice requirements guide for the full checklist. A PDF is a convenient way to share a finished invoice, not a guarantee against editing; keep accessible records and do not assume an invoice alone makes the buyer eligible for an ITC.
