Is Google Invoice free? An invoice can be made at no cost in Google Docs or Sheets with a personal Google account. Google lists a free personal plan with Docs and Sheets; business plans and additional features have separate terms. Its template gallery offers document and spreadsheet templates, but a specific Canadian invoice template is not guaranteed.
Looking for an invoice from Google?
This guide covers making an invoice in Docs or Sheets. If instead you want a billing document Google issued to you, Google’s payments center lists invoices, credit memos and debit memos and lets you download invoices; some features depend on your account permissions.
Make an invoice in Google Docs or Sheets
- Sign in to your Google account and open Docs or Sheets. Choose a template from the gallery if one fits, or start a blank file.
- Add the seller’s name and contact details, the buyer’s name, an invoice number, date, description, amount and payment terms.
- Determine whether you should charge tax and at what rate. Include your GST/HST registration number where applicable, and clearly show the applicable tax and total.
- Check the arithmetic and information. Save your working copy and download or share the completed invoice with the customer.
Google explains how to choose or copy a template and create a sheet. A template is not a CRA approval or a substitute for determining the tax on your sale.
What does an invoice need?
The required supporting-record details depend on the sale amount and scale with it; see GST/HST invoice requirements for the exact thresholds and what to include at each one.
Example and registration check
A registered Ontario consultant invoices $500 for an ordinary taxable service: $500 plus $65 HST at 13% equals $565. Show the supplier and buyer details, GST/HST number, service description and payment terms. The buyer’s ITC depends on eligibility and the required records.
An unregistered small supplier generally does not charge GST/HST, while a voluntarily registered small supplier does charge it on taxable supplies. Taxi and commercial rideshare operators must register regardless of the ordinary threshold. If a seller was required to register earlier, tax can still be owed even if registration paperwork was delayed; check CRA timing rules.
