BC sales tax calculator: add or remove GST and PST

Calculate

Amount before tax$100.00

GST 5%$5.00

PST 7%$7.00

Total with tax$112.00

Example for a standard-rated sale in British Columbia. Applicable provincial taxes are included. JavaScript is needed to change the amount or tax applicability.

To add tax, enter the price before tax. To remove tax, enter the total that already includes the selected taxes. If you change a provincial-tax switch, use the rate that actually applied to the purchase. The result estimates tax arithmetic; it does not determine an exemption, a registration obligation, or eligibility for an input tax credit.

Add tax: the formula

  • GST = price before tax × 0.05
  • PST = price before tax × 0.07
  • Total = price before tax + the applicable tax amounts.

For a $100 purchase, GST is $5.00, PST is $7.00, and the total is $112.00.

Price before tax GST PST Total
$20.00 $1.00 $1.40 $22.40
$100.00 $5.00 $7.00 $112.00
$500.00 $25.00 $35.00 $560.00
$1,000.00 $50.00 $70.00 $1,120.00
$2,500.00 $125.00 $175.00 $2,800.00

If all the selected standard taxes were included, divide the total by 1.12 to estimate the price before tax. Multiply that unrounded base by each applicable rate to find the tax components. Do not subtract 12.00% directly from the total: that percentage was originally applied to a smaller, pre-tax amount.

For a receipt showing $1,120.00, the unrounded base is $1,000.00. GST is $50.00, PST is $70.00. Compare the result with the supplier’s actual invoice. Separately rounded lines or tax components can cause a one-cent difference when reversing a rounded total.

If a total includes only GST — for example because the item is PST-exempt, such as qualifying children’s clothing (see the BC PST exemptions guide) — turn the provincial-tax switch off and divide the total by 1.05 instead. For a $105.00 total, the unrounded base is $100.00 and GST is $5.00.

A receipt dated between July 1, 2010 and March 31, 2013 may show 12% HST rather than separate GST and PST; this calculator’s GST+PST rates do not apply to those older transactions.

What this province setting does

GST and the provincial tax are separate systems. A purchase can have different treatment under each. The provincial-tax switch starts on for the standard combined example; turn it off only after confirming that the provincial tax does not apply. This tool uses general rates and does not calculate special vehicle, accommodation, or other special-category taxes. For a newly built home, GST and the GST new housing rebate work differently; see the GST new housing rebate guide. A 2026 proposal to expand BC PST to certain professional services was paused, and the general 7% PST rate used above did not change; see the BC PST rate update.

A seller’s head-office address does not by itself determine GST/HST. Delivery, the customer address associated with a service, the nature of the supply, and special rules can matter. Start with CRA’s place-of-supply guidance. A zero-rated or exempt supply does not use the standard rate in the examples above.

This is a sales-tax calculator, not an income-tax calculator or a GST/HST return. For business registration, see the GST/HST registration guide. For filing, use the return workflow.

The British Columbia provincial tax authority confirms the general provincial tax rate and links to its separate rules.

For the broader provincial rules, see the British Columbia sales-tax guide.
