This Nova Scotia HST calculator uses Nova Scotia’s 14% HST (5% GST + 9% provincial) for a standard taxable sale. Enter the price, then choose Add tax or Remove tax. The province is fixed to Nova Scotia; the transaction date can matter around a rate change. There is no separate GST or PST line in Nova Scotia: the federal and provincial portions are combined in a single HST.

Total with tax$114.00
Example for a standard-rated sale in Nova Scotia. Applicable provincial taxes are included. JavaScript is needed to change the amount or tax applicability.
To add tax, enter the price before tax. To remove tax, enter the total that already includes the selected taxes. The result estimates tax arithmetic; it does not determine an exemption, a registration obligation, or eligibility for an input tax credit.
Add tax: the formula
- HST = price before tax × 0.14
- Total = price before tax + the applicable tax amounts.
For a $100 purchase, HST is $14.00, and the total is $114.00. Of the $14.00: $5.00 is the federal GST portion and $9.00 is the Nova Scotia provincial portion. A supplier’s invoice does not show these separately; it shows the total 14% HST rate.
| Price before tax | HST | Total |
|---|---|---|
| $20.00 | $2.80 | $22.80 |
| $100.00 | $14.00 | $114.00 |
| $500.00 | $70.00 | $570.00 |
| $1,000.00 | $140.00 | $1,140.00 |
| $2,500.00 | $350.00 | $2,850.00 |
Reverse HST calculator for Nova Scotia: remove tax from a total
If all the selected standard taxes were included, divide the total by 1.14 to estimate the price before tax. Multiply that unrounded base by each applicable rate to find the tax components. Do not subtract 14.00% directly from the total: that percentage was originally applied to a smaller, pre-tax amount.
For a receipt showing $1,140.00, the unrounded base is $1,000.00. HST is $140.00. Compare the result with the supplier’s actual invoice. Separately rounded lines or tax components can cause a one-cent difference when reversing a rounded total.
What this province setting does
Nova Scotia’s HST fell from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025 (see CRA Notice 342). For a transaction around a rate change, the legal transitional rules decide when tax becomes payable; the date on a receipt alone may not settle that question.
Check the transaction before using the result
A seller’s head-office address does not by itself determine GST/HST. Delivery, the customer address associated with a service, the nature of the supply, and special rules can matter. Start with CRA’s place-of-supply guidance. A zero-rated or exempt supply does not use the standard rate in the examples above.
Some purchases in Nova Scotia qualify for a point-of-sale rebate of the 9% provincial portion: when a vendor provides that rebate on qualifying books, children’s clothing and footwear, and children’s diapers, it collects only the 5% federal part, not the full 14%. If the vendor did not credit that rebate and you paid the provincial part, you can apply for a rebate under reason code 16. See the Nova Scotia sales-tax guide for the full exemption and rebate list.
