The CRA’s published GST/HST registration instructions explain how to apply directly, but the official material reviewed did not state a specific GST/HST account registration fee. Confirm any current fee directly with the CRA before applying. A third-party service is optional; its charge is separate from any government fee.

Business number versus GST/HST account

A nine-digit business number (BN) identifies an entity; the GST/HST account adds RT and an account reference. Manitoba’s government business-number FAQ says obtaining the BN is free and distinguishes it from fees that may apply to program services. That statement alone does not establish a fee for a CRA GST/HST account.

How to apply directly

  1. Check whether you need to register and the effective date that applies.
  2. Gather the legal business name, structure, owner or director details, fiscal year-end and expected taxable sales. If the entity already has a BN, have it ready.
  3. Sign in to a CRA account and use Business Registration Online (BRO) if eligible. Save or print the number and program-account details shown during the session.

If you cannot use BRO, follow the alternative for your circumstances in the CRA’s current registration instructions. Business-name registration, incorporation and professional advice are separate services and may involve their own costs.

What obligations follow registration?

Most businesses use the $30,000 worldwide taxable-supply tests, including applicable supplies of associates; taxi and commercial rideshare operators must register regardless of the threshold. Once registered, charge GST/HST on taxable supplies, file returns and maintain the required records. A qualifying registrant may claim input tax credits for eligible tax on commercial purchases, subject to the rules and documentation.

Voluntary registration can be useful where eligible ITCs matter, but it also creates ongoing filing and recordkeeping work. Compare those obligations with your situation rather than treating a third-party filing charge as a tax-saving requirement.
